When CO₂ gas is applied at -110°F with high pressure, it rapidly decreases the skin’s temperature from around 89.6°F to 39.6°F in just 30 seconds, creating a "thermal shock" effect. This reaction stimulates the skin's neuroreceptors, prompting an immediate reflex that engages the neurovegetative system. The physiological responses include increased endocrine and enzymatic activity, diminished pain due to lowered sodium pump activity and nerve signal transmission, and vasomotor activation within the vascular and lymphatic systems. Furthermore, this process aids in muscle relaxation, effectively reducing muscle tone and tension.

Cryotherapy is a treatment that uses extreme cold to target and reduce inflammation, pain, and muscle soreness. It is commonly used for sports recovery and injury rehabilitation.
Localized (targeted) cryotherapy uses a cryo gun to deliver cold air directly to a specific body part. This targeted approach helps reduce pain and swelling in the treated area, promoting faster recovery.
When the body is exposed to extremely cold temperatures during cryotherapy, it triggers a fight-or-flight response, almost like a thermal shock. This causes receptors to send signals to the surface of the skin, initiating the healing process in the targeted area. Once the cold source is removed, blood rushes to the area, promoting repair and rejuvenation at the cellular level.
Targeted cryotherapy is beneficial for many, but there are some contraindications. For example, it is not recommended for individuals in their third trimester of pregnancy (particularly in the ankle area), those with spinal cord issues, or individuals on blood thinners like Coumadin. Diabetic patients, especially those with diabetic foot ulcers, can potentially benefit from cryotherapy, but they must sign a special consent form due to increased risks. An “indication” refers to a valid reason to use a particular treatment, while a “contraindication” refers to a condition or factor that serves as a reason to withhold a certain medical treatment due to the harm that it would cause the patient.
